The
Detroit Public Library has been a U.S. Government Document Depository
Library since 1868. Federal documents are housed in various departments
within the Detroit Public Library and may be searched on our online
Catalog.
For Federal documents prior to 1976 check with a reference librarian.
Many state documents are located in the Technology & Science Department
and may also be searched in our online Catalog.
Several sites for searching State and Federal government documents are
available under
e-resources.
For
a brief description of the types of Federal documents housed in the Technology
& Science Department choose from the following issuing agencies.
U.S.
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
Publishes
an immense amount of material on agriculture and agriculture-related subjects.
Some types of documents of interest in the Technology & Science Department include
agricultural handbooks, home and garden bulletins, agricultural statistics, Soil
Survey Reports, resource bulletins, commodity and livestock reports.
DEPARTMENT
OF THE AIR FORCE
Is responsible for defending the peace and security of the United States. Documents
of interest in the Technology & Science Department are bulletins, regulations,
handbooks, manuals, pamphlets, laboratory technical reports, career development
information, lithographic material.
U.S.
ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS
Manages army engineering. Documents of interest in the Technology & Science Department
include general publications, circulars, research laboratory reports, technical
reports, miscellaneous papers, water experiment bulletins, cold regions research
and engineering, construction engineering, water resource development by individual
state.
DEPARTMENT
OF ENERGY
Is
responsible for all reports, journal articles, conference papers
and proceedings, books, patents and monographs originated by the
department of Energy and Department of Energy Contractors. For
searching, use Department
of Energy Online Databases. Documents housed in the Technology
& Science Department include Energy Research Abstracts,
contractor research and development reports and publications,
conference reports, environmental impact statements.
ENERGY
INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION
Is located within the Department of Energy and is the primary source of government
energy statistics. Documents of interest in the Technology & Science Department
include annual and monthly energy previews, annual energy projections, annual
international energy reviews, state energy data, annual, and monthly statistical
reviews of petroleum, natural gas, and electric power and inventory of power plants
in the U.S.
FEDERAL
AVIATION ADMINISTRATION
Regulates air space in the U.S., conducts research, establishes regulations, controls
aircraft noise and other effects on the environment. Documents of interest in
the Technology & Science Department include circulars, aviation regulations, airworthiness
standards, airport design, instrument approach procedures, flight information
manuals.
U.S.
FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE
Is responsible for migratory birds, endangered species, wet lands, Wildlife Refuge
System, fish, conserving habitat and monitoring environmental contaminants. Documents
of interest in the Technology & Science Department include general publications,
wetlands inventories, wildlife leaflets, habitat suitability models, biological
reports, fish and wildlife conservation.
U.S.
GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
Publishes on the subject of geology. Documents housed in the Technology & Science
Department include bulletins, professional papers, open file reports, water supply
papers, state and national water resource data, earthquake data, reports of investigations
and mineral statistics.
NATIONAL
AERONAUTICS & SPACE ADMINISTRATION
The
administration was preceded by the National Advisory Committee
for Aeronautics (NACA). In 1958 NASA was established, not only
to research the subject of aeronautics and space, but also to
research aerospace aspects of earth resources, energy, and the
environment. For searching NASA documents use National
Technical Reports Server (NTRS). Documents in the Technology
& Science Department include NACA reports, NASA contractor reports,
conference publications, technical briefs, papers, memoranda.
NATIONAL
INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS & TECHNOLOGY
Works
with industry to apply technology, measurements, and standards.
The Technology & Science Department holdings include Voluntary
Product Standards and Federal Information Processing Standards
(FIPS). Searches
can be preformed electronically using the NIST
Scientific and Technical Databases.
NATIONAL
OCEANIC & ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION
Is responsible for reporting the weather conditions of the United States and their
possessions. It provides weather forecasts and conducts numerous research programs
and promotes the development of technology related to weather and climate. Types
of documents housed in the Technology & Science Department include world, state
and local (selected cities) weather data, comparative climatic data, crop bulletins,
monthly weather outlooks, daily weather maps, weather records.
NATIONAL
TECHNICAL INFORMATION SERVICE
Is a self-supporting agency that indexes and sells technical information.
The Technology & Science Department does not have a standing order
for NTIS reports. However, through the U.S. Government Depository
Library Program we do receive a small number of reports. To order

Order Now. NTIS search tools available in the Technology &
Science Department include Dialog on Disc (1980-1999 ), NTIS
Title Index 1964-1992 (microfiche), Office of Technical
Services Indexes (1946 - 1964), and NTIS Government Reports

NUCLEAR
REGULATORY COMMISSION
Regulates commercial, industrial, academic and medical uses of nuclear energy.
Documents of interest housed in the Technology & Science Department include general
publications, rules and regulations, NRC Issuances, licensed operating
reactors, contractor reports.
