Description:
The Technology & Science Collection contains a variety of
information sources -- books, periodicals, microforms, electronic
and other formats related to subjects in science, technology and
the technological arts ranging from Astronomy to Zoology.
Materials:
African
American Scientist and Inventions
Reference books and pamphlets outline many of the discoveries,
inventions and contributions in the fields of medicine and science
made by African Americans. Some biographies and descriptions of
inventions are included.
Science
Fair
Technology & Science houses an extensive collection
of science fair experiment books that cover all disciplines of
the sciences, among which are electricity, chemistry, earth sciences,
astronomy and biology. Books on science fair presentation are

Industry
Standards
The Technology and Science Standards Collection contains the most
recent editions of suggested standards provided by sponsoring
organizations to help industry and business achieve uniformity
of product or process. Current holdings may be verified by calling
the Technology and Science Reference Desk at (313) 833-1450.
Society
of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
DPL receives the SAE Technical Papers on microfiche. Papers, handbooks,
indexes and proceedings from 1906 through the present are available
and searchable through the SAE online database. A password is
needed to use the online database which can be obtained from the
librarian at the desk.
Government
Documents
The Detroit Public Library is a U.S. Government Depository Library and
receives documents from most U.S. government agencies. Documents are
housed in several departments throughout the library. For more details

Resources
The
Technology & Science Department provides books, journals, bibliographic
information and electronic resources on health.
Detroit
Community Aids Library
DCAL
is an online resource providing current information on HIV and
AIDS with special emphasis on Detroit and Southeastern Michigan.
DCAL includes local support organizations, hotlines, computer
networks and guidelines on testing and treatment.
Services:
Photocopying
Photocopies of journal articles or other library materials
may be requested by contacting the Interlibrary
Loan Dept. Public photocopy machines are $.10/page. Copy machines
accept coins and one dollar bills.
Patents
and Trademarks
The
Detroit Public Library has participated in the U.S. Patent and
Trademark Office's Patent
and Trademark Depository Library Program (PTDLP) since 1871.
PTDL's disseminate patent and trademark information and support
the diverse intellectual property needs of the public. Librarians
provide instruction on patent and trademark searching as well
as information regarding the patent and trademark application
process. The Technology and Science Department maintains a collection
of materials on intellectual property and the process of inventing.
Copyright
Information
Copyright
forms are available in the library free to the public. They can
also be obtained at the websites of the US
Copyright Office.Librarians are not permitted to help
customers choose the appropriate form. Librarians will
assist in locating and using copyright search tools, but will
not perform copyright searches, or provide legal advice. The Library
of Congress Information System, LOCIS,
is available electronically for searching copyright registrations
on, or after, January 1, 1978. The Catalog of Copyright Entries,
available at Main Library in paper and micoform, may be used for
searching older copyright registrations.
