  1. When is the collection open?
    Hours are
    Monday - Thursday and Saturday - 10 am - 6 pm (after Labor Day) and Monday - Friday - 10 am - 6 pm (after Memorial Day)

  2. Can I search the NAHC's holdings online?
    Through the library's online catalog, books and some magazine articles may be located. Other materials, however, such as photographs, vertical files, and manuscript collections are not accessible online. For these materials, card catalogs, indexes, and finding aids have been compiled.

  3. Can I access any of the NAHC's materials online?
    None of the collection's materials are available online for use or downloading.

  4. If it is not possible to visit the collection, how can I obtain the information I need?
    The NAHC offers a variety of reference services and can recommend private researchers.

  5. Where is the NAHC located and what parking accomodations are available?
    The NAHC is housed on the second floor of the The Rose and Robert Skillman Branch of the Detroit Public Library which is located at 121 Gratioit Ave., Detroit, MI 48226.

  6. How can I obtain photographic reproductions?
    In order to receive photographic reproductions, a Special Collections Reproduction Permission Form must be completed. To obtain this form and information regarding the costs of reproductions, please contact the NAHC by email nahc@detroit.lib.mi.us.

  7. What is the date range of the NAHC's materials?
    The collection contains materials documenting the earliest attempts at motorized, land transportation up to the present.

  8. Is the NAHC restricted to only the U.S. automotive industry?
    The collection offers a vast array of materials concerning both the U.S. and world-wide automotive industry.

  9. Does the NAHC contain information about other modes of transportation besides automobiles?
    In addition to automobiles, the collection documents the history and development of other forms of motorized, wheeled, land transportation such as motorcycles, mopeds, buses, etc. . .

  10. What types of materials might the NAHC contain that would help restore or fix a vehicle?
    Pertinent materials would include photographs, factory service and parts manuals, color and trim books, owner's manuals, and specifications.

  11. Can any of the materials be borrowed or interlibrary loaned?
    The materials of the NAHC are non-circulating. At the discretion of the library, however, the NAHC honors interlibrary loan requests for books and articles from outside researchers that are placed through their local public or academic library.
