Description
The Detroit Subregional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped
provides services, in accordance with the guidelines established by the U.S.
Library of Congress National Library Service (NLS), to those who cannot read
conventional print material, including persons who are blind, visually handicapped,
physically handicapped, or reading disabled.
The LBPH collection
is primarily a leisure collection of books on tape with adult
and juvenile Bestsellers, Classics, Black History, and Old Time
Radio Shows. It also includes Large Print books, regular print
books and journals about disabilities, reference sources on the
ADA, and self-instruction sign language video cassettes and CD-ROMs.

LBPH provides many programs and activities for its users. One particular

Materials
Talking Books, along with talking book machines, are available
to eligible residents who live in a 14 ZIP code area of Detroit and Highland Park.
Loans of the books and machines are made to individuals and to institutions such
as schools, nursing homes and senior residences. Over 51,575 book titles are available
(many in Spanish) as well as some magazines including Ebony, Good Housekeeping
and Sports Illustrated. Sheet music in Large Print and Braille and recorded music
instruction are available through the NLS office in Washington D.C. All materials
can be provided through the mail Free Matter for the Blind. There is no cost for
the customer.
LBPH publishes a quarterly newsletter, In Focus, describing
services, programs, and activities.
