The
Friends of the E. Azalia Hackley Collection (FAH) is committed to increasing awareness
and financial resources for the Hackley Collection. FAH supports the Collection
through membership and advocacy. Members of FAH form a network of friends that
supports and enhances the collection development process. Under
the umbrella of the Friends of Detroit Public Library Foundation, FAH members
receive the benefits of both parent and subsidiary organizations. Those benefits
include, among others, invitations to pre-sales and pre-exhibit opening events,
special invitations to author lecture/signings, private receptions with performing
artists, reserved seating for Hackley concerts, and more. The
E. Azalia Hackley Collection is one of the nations foremost research collections
for the documentation of achievements by Blacks in all genres of the performing
arts. Created in 1943 by a gift from the Detroit chapter of the National Association
of Negro Musicians, the Collection was named in honor of Madame E. Azalia Hackley
(1867-1922), singer, educator and humanitarian. Madame Hackley is revered for
a life-long career in promoting Black music and musicians. The
E. Azalia Hackley Collection is an archive devoted to preserving the legacy of
the Black performing artist for the world. JOIN FAH: Friends of the Hackley Collection
