Description
The newly renamed Popular Library was formerly known as the Browsing Library. The Popular Library is located in the middle of the central hallway running between the Woodward and Cass Avenue doors.

The Popular Library is home to non-fiction subject collections on library science, journalism, publishing, sports, biography, and topics of current interest.

Frequently requested library genres for adults are well represented within the Popular Library's general fiction collections:

  • Traditional African-American and African Literature
  • Contemporary African-American Urban/Hip-Hop Literature
  • African-American/Christian Inspirational Fiction
  • New Books
  • Horror
  • Popular Fiction
  • Science Fictions/Fantasy
  • Romance

In addition to its fiction collection, the Popular Library offers a wide variety of general interest magazines, such as Consumer Reports as well as community, local and out of town newspapers. The Popular Library also oversees a large collection of feature and educational films in DVD and VHS format for adults and children.

Popular Library maintains a unique microfilm archive of newspapers: The Detroit News (dating back to 1873); The Detroit Free Press (dating back to 1831); The Detroit Times (dating back to 1900); The London Times (1785-2000, excluding Sundays); The New York Times (dating back to 1851); the American Periodical series which includes selected colonial American newspapers.

Magnisight lights and a selection of large-print books for the visually impaired, microfilm reader/printers, professional reference assistance, including film reference and reader’s advisory services are always available.

Services
Photocopy Service:
Self-serve public copy machines are available at a rate of $.10 per page. The copy machines accept only coins and $1 bills. Microfilm copies cost $.25 per page. Microfilm machines accept quarters only.
