The Detroit Public Library 2010 Tax Assistance Program

Accounting Aid Society offers free tax preparation by volunteers at four Detroit Public Library locations. Eligibility guidelines for this free service are based on annual household income:

Maximum Income:
Up to $20,000 for Individuals Up to $42,000 Families
(Married couples or a person with at least one dependant)

This service includes preparation of federal, state, and city tax returns, and application for credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, First-Time Homebuyer Credit, Home Heating Credit, Homestead Property Tax Credit, and Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Incentives.

FOR TAX ASSISTANCE, BRING THE FOLLOWING

For tax assistance, bring driver’s license or state ID; Social Security Numbers for yourself (and spouse and dependents if applicable); and income statements or forms such as W-2s, unemployment, pension, Social Security, child support, and miscellaneous Income. Proof of each Social Security Number must be provided (card, federal document, or copy of previous year’s tax return that the society prepared).

To claim deductions or credits for home purchase, energy-efficiency upgrades, medical expenses, dependent care expense, or student loan interest or tuition, bring all supporting documents.

For the property tax credit, homeowners need to bring proof of the taxable value of their home, plus property tax bills from 2009. Renters need to bring lease agreements, rent receipts, and landlord’s name and address.

For the heating credit, bring the amount spent on heating your home for the year. Contact your heat provider for this information, or find it on your December, January, and February statements. For 2009 taxes, the period will be 11/1/2008 to 10/31/2009.

To have federal and state refunds directly deposited to a bank or credit union account, bring institution name and routing number, and your account number.

 


WALK-IN SERVICE

Be advised that the number of people served each day depends on the number of volunteer tax preparers available. People must register or take numbers on arrival. At Main Library on Fridays and Saturdays, the line forms at the Cass entrance well in advance of the library opening. On Tuesdays at Main, sign in begins at noon in the Popular Library; participants will be called in order of signup starting at 4:00. At Edison Branch on Tuesdays, sign in begins at 10:00 when the branch opens.
