Allan Barnes and Giant Step

Saxophonist, Allan Barnes has assembled an outstanding ensemble of musicians who have all fronted their own bands. Barnes leads these accomplished and well-known musicians in a tribute to saxophone greats the likes of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Lester Young and more. A duet off and on stage, Ursula Walker and Buddy Budson are mainstays of the Detroit music world. Both as individual performers and as a great team, their classy, sophisticated jazz has graced a multitude of local and national stages, and garnered them many awards including induction into the Jazz Hall of Fame of Midwest Arts Legends of Jazz. It’s a partnership honed by great skill and lots of love. Enjoy!

Pathe Jassi - April 21, 2009, 6:00 p.m.

Pathe Jassi

The secret is out! Bassist Pathe Jassi is a fabulous addition to the Detroit's jazz music scene. Back home in Senegal, Jassi would say, "……I learned how to play jazz the Detroit way, and I fell in love with the city years before I ever came here." Jassi spent half of his career playing and recording alongside legendary West African singers Youssou N'Dour of Senegal and Cheikh Lo of Burkina Faso. He's known among jazz musicians for his rare ability to combine hard bebop with a polyrhythmic African sound — a skill he says he learned from his adopted father and Detroit jazz legend Sam Sanders.

Marvin Jones - May 19, 2009, 6:00 p.m.

Marvin Jones

“Pure Jazz-Classic yet contemporary – Totally Fresh”, was one of the comments made about this jazz trio. They have a freshness and flair that’s all its own. The music showcases Marvin Jones’s beautifully expressive vocals

Marcus Belgrave - June 16, 2009, 6:00 p.m.

Marcus Belgrave

Our beloved jazz master brings New Orleans style as only he can, Marcus Belgrave returns to the Comerica Java & Jazz stage. Accompanied by Charlie Gabriel, his long-time friend and fellow jazz standard bearer, Marcus and company come ready to excite and throw-down every time, all the time. Don’t miss it!
