Knight Foundation

In November 2009, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation awarded a major grant to the Detroit Public Library for the purpose of implementing reading instructions, technology literacy, and offering career development strategies in its newly renovated Technology, Literacy & Career Center at the Parkman Branch.   As a result, the Parkman Branch has expanded free Internet and WIFI access to the public and is able to serve Detroiters in the neighborhood who are literacy challenged, need access to the Internet, or help finding jobs.

The Parkman Literacy program is outfitted with dedicated tutors five days per week who are available to work with learners in a private setting. The program offers reading and math instruction to those who want to improve their reading, writing, and math skills for personal improvement or in preparation for the GED examination.
