What is Junior Great Books 2008-2009

Junior Great Books combines interpretive discussion and activities with outstanding literature to help all students learn to read for meaning and think critically. Students in grades 1-12 meet at Main Library beginning September for ten Saturdays to discuss the readings.

Registration forms are available in the Children's Library. The $16.00 registration fee covers the cost of the book containing the short stories used for each session. For further information about the Great Books Program visit The Great Books Foundation.

Method -- Shared Inquiry Discussion and Interpretive Activities
The Great Books Foundation has developed a superior method for structured, lively discussion of authentic literature. We call it shared inquiry because the search for meaning in a story is a genuine investigation shared by everyone in the discussion, including the adult leader. Written and oral interpretive activities extend this structured search for meaning to every stage of the reading and writing process.

Materials -- Great Literature
Great Books publishes the finest children's literature anywhere, literature that has been carefully selected to challenge the reader and to spark rigorous discussion. The stories are complex and multifaceted, allowing children and adults to ask questions about the story that are genuine and thought-provoking.

Teacher Materials and Interpretive Activities
Junior Great Books reading, writing, and discussion activities move beyond the factual level to focus on the central problems of meaning in a story. Students are asked genuine open-ended questions that invite many responses. Because the interpretive activities are highly specific to each story and build on one another, teachers can easily encourage a wide range and depth of thinking in their students.
