Career and employment information at the Detroit Public Library
is concentrated in the Career & Employment Information Center, which is located
on the first floor of the Main Library in the south wing. The Career Center is
part of the combined Sociology & Economics - Philosophy, Religion & Education
Department. The Career Center offers resources to help you make career decisions,
strategize your job search, and uncover job listings. Staff knowledgeable in career
and employment issues is assigned full-time to the Career Center to assist job
seekers in choosing Career Center resources and identifying additional resources
located throughout the Library system. Circulating materials can be sent to any
of the neighborhood branch libraries. Help
Getting Started - The
Career Center is the place to get started. Staff will assist you in mapping out
an informational strategy and identifying resources appropriate to each step of
your job search.
In-depth
Career and Employment Information - Over
2,500 career and job-related books on choosing a career, changing careers, expanding
your employment options, job hunting, resumes, cover letters, filling out job
applications, and job interviewing. Also available, the Michigan Occupational
Information System (MOIS), a searchable database offering career interest searches
and national and local career and salary information.
- MS
Word is available in the Career Center for the preparation of resumes and cover
letters. We will help you to get started and are happy to offer suggestions along
the way. No appointments are needed, and the service is free. Before you come,
spend a little time organizing your thoughts and making a list of your employment
dates. Also you may want to prepare yourself by consulting one or more of the
over 400 Career Center resume and cover letter books which are available for check
out or use in the department. You'll definitely want to save
your resume or cover letter to a disk for future use, so either bring along
a 3½ inch disk, or plan on buying a disk for $1.00 at the Great Lakes Patent
& Trademark Center reference desk in the Technology & Science Dept. on the second
floor of the Main Library.
- We'll
help you identify useful job search Web sites and show you how to search through
the job postings. We can assist with company research techniques so that you can
develop a target list of potential employers.

We will show you how to respond online to job postings, either via e-mail or by
completing an application form on a potential employer's Web site. We can also
assist you with updating a resume previously posted to the Internet, and with
opening an e-mail account at one of the many Internet sites that offers free e-mail
accounts.
- Free monthly single-session
90-minute workshops are presented in the Internet
Lab by the Career Center staff. Useful job search sites will be identified,
and participants will learn how to put a resume on the Internet, how to apply
for a job online either via e-mail or by completing an electronic transmission
form, and how to use the Internet to research companies. Check the current schedule
of Computer Workshop
Schedule for the date and time of the next scheduled workshop. Call the Internet
Lab at 313-833-4790 to register. Registrations will be accepted on the day of
the workshop only, except for Saturday 10:30 a.m. classes, for which you may register
on Friday.
- Test
preparation books for aptitude tests, civil service exams, postal service exams,
government careers, law enforcement exams, Armed Forces tests, and licensing and
certification exams. Reference copies for use in the Library and one-week circulating
copies for home use.
